Teaching

I am committed to teaching and mentoring students in a variety of academic settings, both formal and informal. I have mentored a number of students at different educational levels (see below). I am particularly comfortable in a rigorous academic setting because I enjoy doing high-level research while working closely with high school, undergraduate and graduate students. My own educational experience as a woman in science at Oberlin College and at Rutgers University has instilled in me the importance (both for the student and the scientist) of combining research and teaching in science education. A higher educational setting is conductive to both cutting-edge research and top-quality education where I can influence not only the greater fields of biochemistry, geomicrobiology, photosynthesis research, bioinorganic chemistry, molecular biology, and Earth system science but also the lives of the students I mentor.
